The Student Advocacy Center of Michigan is an organization that was formed in 1975 against racial injustice in the Ann Arbor Public School system. Since then, it has grown to serve the state of Michigan, advocating for every student’s right to an education. They help students and their families who are facing expulsions and suspensions, homelessness, immigration issues, pregnancy and parenthood, and more, understand their rights. This organization provides deep and meaningful support to students who are most in need of it— from mentors, advice, to the tools students need to graduate successfully.

A LOGO FOR THE FUTURE (THAT LOOKS GOOD ON A SHIRT)

Student Advocacy Center had a logo that was historic. Over time, it was losing relevance to today’s youth— and it got hard to read at a small scale. We designed a logo that preserved the grassroots ethics of the original, and created a brand identity that was inspiring and powerful, like they are. We redesigned their website, keeping in mind the needs of the audience who would have an urgent need for the information on the site. Imagining parents and students in complex conflict with institutional educational systems, we wanted to provide ease and access, as well as a feeling of security and simplicity. At the same time, we sought to inspire energy and activism around these important issues: to let everyone know that they aren’t alone and that together we can make systemic change.
